A Tribute to Robert Pagano

Loved by All

Robert (Bob) Pagano, 84, of Glen Allen, VA, passed away suddenly, surrounded by those he loved, on October 19th, 2024, after complications from surgery.

Bob was born in Brooklyn, NY, on March 30th, 1940, to the late James Pagano and Frances Pagano. He grew up in East New York (Brooklyn) and attended Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School, where he played basketball. He served in the U.S. Army in Panama from 1959 to 1962 as a Company Clerk, honorably concluding his service with the rank of Corporal (E-4). He graduated from Baruch College (BBA ‘73) and earned an MBA from Pace University.

After high school, Bob worked as a clerk at the U.S. Trust Company of New York (now Bank of America), where he worked most of his career. Due to his hard work, dedication, intelligence, and wit, he rose to vice president of institutional asset services. An accomplished salesman, Bob supported the bank's growth in selling investment and custodial services to trust and insurance clients.

After 38 years with US Trust, he launched TRP Consulting, which provided banking and financial consulting services for another 10 years. Friends from work described him as a level-headed man in an evolving industry, always a gentleman, a kind human being with a fabulous sense of humor that kept everyone laughing.

In the early years, to ensure financial security for his growing family, Bob also leveraged his skills in several side hustles, ranging from tax preparation to bartending to carpet sales. He even worked as a travel guide in South America and Mexico for several weeks at a time!

For nearly 40 years, Bob commuted to Wall Street and midtown from the family homestead in East Northport, NY. He had a daily rhythm to his commuter life, driving the “station car” to the Long Island Railroad, where he read his first two newspapers and did his daily puzzles (Newsday, Daily News), then two more papers on the way home (Wall Street Journal, New York Post). After a long, hot summer commute, he loved to jump in the pool with his wife and kids.

In retirement, Bob enjoyed traveling with his wife and family, visiting with his grandkids, and celebrating the accomplishments of everyone he loved. He liked a good novel by Clancy, Ludlum, or Patterson. He enjoyed Delray Beach, playing games and golf with friends. He also watched golf, poker, and tennis matches with his beloved. He absolutely loved the Yankees and was a dedicated lifetime fan. For Bob Pagano, it was always a good day when the Yankees were winning.

Bob loved music. He shared stories about paying one dollar to drop in for Tito Puentes shows and other jazz greats. He delighted in a good Frank Sinatra song and could be caught singing, cooking, and drinking wine most holidays with his family. He loved dancing with his favorite lifelong dance partner–doing the Cha Cha, Mambo, Lindy, and Meringue–even if there was no dance floor, wherever music played.

He is survived by his many adoring family members, including his one lifelong love, his wife, Patricia (Marotta) Pagano (married almost 62 years); his children, Theresa Muller, Robert Pagano, and Patricia Steele; sons-in-law, James Ariail, Thomas Muller, Douglas Steele; daughter-in-law, Jurgita Pagano; grandchildren, Amelia Muller, Edward Muller, Abigail Steele, Ella Steele; his bonus grandchildren, Lila Ariail, Vivienne Ariail, Owen Ariail; and many nieces, nephews, in-laws and cousins. He is also preceded in death by his late brothers John and Eugene (Babe) Pagano.

He was an exceptional man. He was kind to the core, always so proud of his children and grandchildren, and ready to do anything to care for those he loved. He had no pretense, just authentic interest and curiosity in those around him. He was always himself wherever he was – working on Wall Street, dining in a five-star restaurant, riding the train – a young man from Brooklyn who sought to do his best for his family above all else.
